IEA projects global growth in energy consumption

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released its highly anticipated Electricity 2025 report, which outlines the future of global electricity. The report highlights the strong growth in global energy demand through 2027, driven by the electrification of sectors such as construction, transport and industry, as well as the growing use of air conditioning and data centers.

The study analyzes key trends for the period 2025 to 2027, providing forecasts on demand, supply and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions at global and regional levels . Key points of interest include the expansion of energy systems and the growing presence of climate-dependent energy sources. The report also addresses methods for ensuring the security and resilience of electricity systems in a scenario of accelerated energy transition.

The growth of electrification and its impacts

The transition to a more electrified global economy is one of the key findings of Electricity 2025 . With buildings, transport and industries increasingly dependent on electricity, energy demand is expected to grow at a rapid pace . This phenomenon is directly linked to digitalization, which is driving increased consumption in data centers and HVAC systems.

The IEA warns that this new dynamic requires robust investment in energy infrastructure to ensure a secure and reliable supply. The need for renewable sources is also intensifying, as the transition to a cleaner energy mix is essential to meeting global climate goals.

Trends and challenges in the global energy market

The report also provides insights into emerging phenomena in the electricity sector , such as the increasing occurrence of negative wholesale electricity prices in certain markets. This occurs when supply exceeds demand at times of peak renewable generation, resulting in extremely low or even negative prices to avoid overloading the grid.

Another highlight is the evolution of the Chinese market, which receives a special analysis in this edition of Electricity 2025. China plays a central role in the global energy transition, with its growing demand and the massive expansion of renewable sources shaping the future of the electricity sector.
