Hydrogen hubs: Brazil advances in industrial decarbonization with selection of strategic projects

The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) announced the result of the public call for low-carbon hydrogen hubs , reinforcing Brazil's commitment to the energy transition and industrial decarbonization. The initiative is part of the national hydrogen strategy, focused on consolidating the country as a leader in the production and use of sustainable hydrogen by 2035.

Diversified potential and national reach

In total, 70 proposals were submitted from 20 states, covering all regions of Brazil . The selected projects stand out for the diversity of hydrogen production sources, including electricity connected to the National Interconnected System (SIN), wind energy, solar energy, biomass and ethanol. Production capacity varied widely, from 1,000 to 350,000 tons per year, highlighting Brazil's potential as a global hub for sustainable hydrogen.

The analysis of the proposals considered criteria such as eligibility, production volume, industrial application and environmental impact. The planned use of hydrogen covers strategic sectors, such as the production of green steel, aluminum, fertilizers, refining and e-methanol. The location of the projects was also a determining factor, prioritizing industrial hubs and port areas with privileged logistical access.

Thiago Barral, National Secretary for Energy Transition and Planning at the MME, highlighted the role of hubs as drivers of decarbonization. “The results indicate the great potential of low-emission hydrogen to transform Brazilian industry , promoting competitiveness and sustainability on the global stage,” he said.

Next steps and international integration

The selected proposals will now move on to a detailed stage of technical and economic characterization, with a view to accessing resources from the international fund Climate Investments Funds – Industry Decarbonization (CIF-ID). Under the coordination of the Secretariat of International Affairs of the Ministry of Finance, Brazil seeks to consolidate international partnerships to make these projects viable , with support from organizations such as the Brazil-UK Hydrogen HUB and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Hydrogen hubs are part of the National Hydrogen Program (PNH2), whose Triennial Work Plan 2023-2025 defines ambitious goals for the implementation of low-emission hydrogen hubs by 2035. Strategic alignment between the government, private initiative and international partners is seen as essential to transform Brazil into a global reference in the energy transition.
