EPE publishes study that provides a prospective assessment of the margins of the transmission system in the northeast region for connecting hydrogen production loads

The Energy Research Company – EPE has just published a new study that provides a prospective assessment of the margins of the transmission system in the northeast region for connecting hydrogen production loads.

EPE has been monitoring the great interest of entrepreneurs in the installation of hydrogen production plants in Brazil. According to data from the Ministry of Mines and Energy, which is the body responsible for receiving protocols for free consumers to access the Basic Network, interest has been registered in 11 projects totaling 45.4 GW of installed capacity by 2038.

With the aim of guiding transmission planning and providing a signal to entrepreneurs, EPE took the initiative to carry out a prospective analysis to assess the capacity of the transmission system in the Northeast region to serve large loads.

The results of this assessment are the first stage of the "Prospective study for the insertion of hydrogen loads in the Northeast region", scheduled to be completed in October 2025, which will aim to evaluate prospective works to increase margins for connecting hydrogen production loads in the Northeast region.

The margin was assessed for 8 connection points at 500 kV (Parnaíba III, Pecém III, João Câmara III, João Pessoa II, Suape II, Messias, Porto Sergipe and Camaçari II), covering all states in the Northeast geoelectric region.
