Brazil records the largest expansion of its electricity grid in history in 2024

The Brazilian energy sector reached a historic milestone in 2024 with the largest expansion of the electricity grid ever recorded since measurements began by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) in 1997. In total, 10.9 gigawatts (GW) were added to the country's installed capacity, surpassing the target set for the year by 747.35 megawatts (MW). The growth was driven mainly by renewable sources , consolidating Brazil as a global leader in the sustainable energy transition.

Renewable energy leads expansion

The growth of the Brazilian electricity grid was marked by the leading role of solar photovoltaic and wind sources, which together accounted for 91.13% of the new installed capacity in the year . In total, 301 new plants were connected to the system in 16 states, 147 of which were solar photovoltaic (5,629.69 MW) and 121 were wind power plants (4,260.57 MW). This performance reinforces the growing competitiveness of these sources in the country, driven by the favorable natural potential and the evolution of energy policies.

Among the states that most expanded their generation infrastructure, Minas Gerais led with an increase of 3,173.85 MW, followed by Bahia (2,408.67 MW) and Rio Grande do Norte (1,816.38 MW) . The trend towards decentralization of the matrix, with investments distributed across different regions, contributes to strengthening national energy security and diversifying supply.

Total generation capacity and expansion monitoring

With record growth in 2024, the total capacity of centralized plants in Brazil reached 208.9 GW, of which 84.95% correspond to renewable sources , according to ANEEL's Generation Information System (SIGA).

To monitor and oversee the development of power generation, ANEEL's RALIE dashboard provides detailed information on the expansion of electricity supply in the country , allowing a broad and interactive view of the sector. The data is updated monthly and includes on-site inspections and analyses of the Electric Power Generation Project Monitoring Report (Rapeel), ensuring greater transparency on ongoing projects.

The exceptional performance of Brazil's electricity grid in 2024 reaffirms the country's commitment to sustainability and energy security , consolidating its position as a growth model based on clean and renewable sources. The advancement of solar and wind energy not only reinforces Brazil's position on the global stage , but also drives economic development and innovation in the energy sector.
